Tema: IUPAC bak kulissene – IUPAC behind the scenes
Sammendrag
Foredraget vil være en rapport fra et ferskt dypdykk i IUPACs arkiv for perioden 1920-2010. Mangfold og turbulens er to inntrykk som festet seg. Det ble gjort interessante funn om Norges innmeldelse i 1920, men det meste av foredraget vil ta for seg den langvarige striden om navnsettingen av grunnstoff og IUPACs arbeid med kjemiske våpen.
The lecture will be a report from a recent investigation of the IUPAC archives from the period 1920-2010. Multifaceted and turbulent are two lasting impressions. Interesting facts about the entry of Norway into the union were discovered, but most of the lecture will be devoted to the long battle about naming chemical elements and IUPAC’s dealing with chemical weapons.

Tema: PFAS – a new environmental challenge to meet
Sammendrag
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) constitute a large group of anthropogenic chemicals with many valuable properties, but also of very high environmental concern because they are persistent and toxic and have a high bioaccumulation potential. PFAS have therefore received global attention, and as novel analytical methods have been developed and enabled better detection of PFAS and PFAS metabolites, their pollution of the environment has appeared to be significant. Banning the use of PFAS and clean-up of the environment are two emerging issues in this context. In the lecture, the properties, sources and fate of PFAS will be presented, and work being done to make the analyses better will be highlighted and discussed. In addition, recent maximum levels of specific PFAS in certain foodstuffs set by the European Commission will be highlighted.

Sammendrag
Høstmark gjorde grundig rede for aktiviteter og utstillinger som har kjemisk innhold og tar for seg kjemiske problemstillinger tilpasset ulike alderstrinn. Etter presentasjonen var det guidet omvisning i hele senteret. Besøket resulterte i en artikkel i Kjemi nr. 1 i 2024; den er tilgjengelig på www.kjemidigital.no/dm/1-2024/16.

Tema: The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023
Sammendrag
The winners were Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Aleksey Yekimov “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots”. Brus and Yekimov developed methods to generate quantum dots, whereas Bawendi revolutionized their chemical production. The lecturer explained their achievements in a way that could be understood even by nonspecialists.
