Dr. Taber joined the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge in 1999 where he still works as an Emeritus Professor in Science Education. Keith S. Taber has done an extensive amount of research related to learning in chemistry, physics, and science more generally, and has published a huge number of articles and books on the subject. Keith Taber was the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Education Award Winner 2014, an award made «For extensive research that has contributed significantly to the teaching and learning of chemistry concepts».

Sammendrag
It is well known that learners are often found to hold alternative conceptions (‘misconceptions’) that do notmatch the scientific models met in the curriculum. This talk will focus on some common alternative ideas that have been elicited from learners in the topic of chemical bonding and some closely related concepts (such as chemical stability and ionization energy). These conceptions relate to abstract entities (electrons, ions, atoms, molecules) that students never directly experience in their everyday lives, raising the question of whether teaching approaches are actually contributing to the development of some of these alternative ways of
thinking.
The talk will very briefly consider the nature of student alternative conceptions (in particular, the range of characteristics of reported conceptions), and possible sources of such alternative ways of thinking. This will provide a background for discussing some common alternative conceptions related to chemical bonding and associated topics.
The research providing the examples discussed was largely carried out in England, although findings have been reflected in work carried out in a number of other countries. However, we would expect cultural factors to influence the development of student thinking, so it is reasonable to conjecture that learners in the Norwegian context (e.g., language of instruction, curriculum, common teaching practices) will likely show both similarities and differences regarding the alternative conceptions that commonly develop compared to those elsewhere. Colleagues at the seminar may wish to reflect on the extent to which the learners they work with share the same ways of thinking as those discussed in the talk.
